Restoring a Stunning Art Deco Birch Desk | Part 1 of 2

An unexpected discovery changes this Art Deco desk restoration: Marc and Lucien find the original broken scroll moulding, and it fits! Join us in the Antique Repair Shop as we begin restoring a Swedish birch pedestal desk, circa 1930. Its tiger birch veneer includes inset triangular panels and a contrasting moulded edge.

In Part 1 of 2, we assess the marked top, missing fittings and damaged veneer, protect the original beaded edge, and start stripping and sanding the desktop. A veneer patch, oak shelving stock and the recovered scroll all help move the repair forward while we aim to keep as much original character as possible.

Part 2 continues with staining, French polishing, the replacement lock and a closer look at the revived desk.
