When to Seek an Independent Antique Valuation

Collecting & ValuationDate Published

A valuation has a purpose: insurance replacement, probate, family division, sale advice or loan security. The same object can have different appropriate values for different purposes.

What to do

Choose a valuer with relevant specialism and state the intended use. Provide provenance and restoration records but allow independent examination.

Before you commit

Market prices change, so insurance schedules need periodic review. An offer to buy is not automatically an independent valuation.

Keep the record

Keep the dated report, scope, photographs and valuer's credentials with your records.
