
How to Troubleshoot Antique Furniture Locks and Keys
A stiff lock may be dirty, misaligned, worn or operated by the wrong key. Forcing it can snap the key or damage an irreplaceable lock case.
Assess the object
Support the door or drawer and inspect alignment before blaming the mechanism. Compare the key with known originals, look for burrs and confirm it enters fully without force.
Photograph the condition in clear light and keep all detached fragments, screws and labels. Consider the surrounding materials as well as the obvious fault: a method safe for metal may damage wood, lacquer, shell, paint or gilding.
Conservative action
If accessible, remove the lock only with correctly fitting tools and record screw positions. A specialist locksmith can clean the case, repair springs, make a fitted key and preserve original wards. Correct hinge or drawer alignment before adjusting the lock.
Choose the least invasive step that stabilises the object. Test materials and handling procedures before committing to treatment, and use padded supports so pressure is distributed safely.
Avoid irreversible damage
Do not spray oil, graphite or penetrating fluid into the keyhole. Never use pliers on the key or drill the lock while it remains in historic wood. Avoid replacement mortices that require enlarging the recess.
Do not let speed, brightness or invisibility become the main goal. Original surfaces, construction marks and old repairs can carry historical value even when they are imperfect.
Long-term care
Operate the repaired lock gently, keep the key labelled and stored separately, and retain replaced internal parts with the object record.
Document any intervention and review the area periodically. Stable conditions and careful use reduce the need for repeated treatment.
