Steam-Bent Wood: How to Recognise the Technique

Steam bending softens wood so a solid component can be curved around a form. It preserves long fibres and can create strong, light parts with little waste.

What to look for

Follow the grain around the bend. Laminated curves show multiple layers; carved curves cut across grain; bent solid wood generally carries continuous fibres through the shape.

Common mistakes

Checks, compressed fibres and old fractures often appear at tight bends. Metal straps and screws may be original assembly features or later repairs.

Care and repair

Do not try to straighten a distorted component with household steam. Controlled bending requires knowledge of species, moisture, heat and existing finish.
