How to Repair a Split Cabinet-Door Stile

Remove the door only if it can be supported safely. Inspect hinge screws, mortise-and-tenon joints, trapped panels and glazing. A split beside a hinge often reflects loose screws or excessive door weight. Dry-fit the break and restore the cause before gluing. Use padded cauls shaped around mouldings and keep adhesive from panels and glass. Reinforcement should be designed around the grain and original construction; surface-mounted plates usually transfer stress and disfigure the stile.

Examine the whole object

Take the furniture out of service and photograph the fault, adjacent joints and previous repairs. Check whether movement elsewhere caused the visible damage.

Prepare carefully

Label removed components and retain original fragments and fixings. Clean only failed adhesive or debris that prevents an accurate fit. Rehearse the repair with padded supports and clamps.

Make the repair

Use compatible materials and introduce as little new wood or adhesive as necessary. Apply pressure gradually, monitor alignment and protect polish, veneer, glass, metal and upholstery.

Preserve evidence

Avoid added screws, expanding glue, thick filler and broad sanding. Tool marks, shrinkage, wear and removable construction can all reveal how the furniture was made and used.

Test and maintain

Allow full cure before loading or moving the object. Check function slowly and stop if a joint opens or binds. Complex breaks, decorated surfaces and rare pieces deserve specialist assessment.
