How to Read Bronze and Brass Patina

Copper-alloy surfaces may be naturally oxidised, chemically patinated, lacquered, gilded or repeatedly polished.

What to examine

Compare recesses, high points and protected undersides. Look for powdery corrosion, coating edges and tool marks.

Avoid the common trap

Colour cannot identify alloy or age by itself. Avoid scraping through the surface for a bright-metal test.

Record your findings

Photograph the whole object, the feature in context and a close-up with scale. Note what is observed separately from any conclusion.
