How to Preserve Antique Baskets and Woven Fibre

Baskets may combine cane, willow, grasses, bark, dyed fibre and repairs from different periods.

Safe routine care

Lift with two hands under the base, not by handles. Use soft supports so distorted sides are not forced into shape.

What not to do

Dust and insects can hide between fibres. Vacuum at low suction through a screen only when weaving is secure; avoid washing.

Storage and specialist help

Keep dry but not brittle, away from sun, damp floors and abrupt humidity change.
