Patina, Oxidation and Dirt: Know the Difference

Patina is the accumulated visual effect of ageing, use, light, oxidation, finish and maintenance. It is not simply dirt, and it cannot be manufactured by applying one coloured product.

What to look for

Compare exposed areas with protected undersides and interiors. Honest wear often relates to handling and function; grime may sit independently on every surface.

Common mistakes

Cleaning can improve legibility, but removing every colour difference may erase history. Artificially dark coatings can also conceal repairs or mixed components.

Care and repair

Begin with dry methods and a small test. Decide what the treatment is meant to preserve before choosing a cleaner.
