Parquetry Explained: Geometric Veneer Patterns

Parquetry uses repeated geometric veneer units rather than pictorial scenes. Cubes, diamonds, chevrons, stars and lattice patterns can animate table tops, cabinets and writing furniture.

What to look for

Check whether units repeat logically around borders and fittings. Variation in colour can result from timber figure, light exposure, old finish or later replacement.

Common mistakes

Open joints may reflect normal wood movement. Filling every hairline gap can lock the surface and cause fresh damage when humidity changes.

Care and repair

Use a dry, soft cloth and stable conditions. Never flood-clean a patterned top; moisture can travel through numerous joints.
