How to Tell Brass from Bronze on Antique Objects

Brass and bronze are both copper alloys, and aged surfaces can make them difficult to distinguish by sight. Brass is principally copper alloyed with zinc; bronze is principally copper alloyed with tin, though historic recipes contain other elements.

Start with colour cautiously

Fresh brass is often yellow or golden, while many bronzes appear warmer, browner or redder. Patination, lacquer, dirt and corrosion can completely alter colour. Never polish a hidden area simply to expose bright metal; original patina and surface treatment may be important.

Look at how the object was made

Both alloys can be cast. Brass is also common in sheet, turned and stamped components, including candlesticks, furniture mounts and scientific instruments. Bronze is widely used for sculpture, bells and cast decorative objects.

Construction supports identification but does not prove composition. Historic labels such as "bronze" may also have been used loosely in trade descriptions.

Examine wear and corrosion

High points may reveal warmer bare metal beneath a darker patina. Copper alloys can develop black tarnish and green or blue-green corrosion. These products occur on both brass and bronze and cannot reliably distinguish the alloy.

Powdery, active or expanding corrosion requires conservation advice. Do not remove it with household acids, wire wool or metal polish.

Try a magnet only as a limited check

Brass and bronze themselves are not magnetic, but internal iron, screws, armatures or plating can attract a magnet. A magnetic response may suggest iron beneath a brass-coloured surface, but no response does not separate brass from bronze.

Keep strong magnets away from clocks, compasses and sensitive mechanisms.

Check marks and documentation

Foundry marks, maker stamps, model numbers and old invoices may identify the material. Compare documented examples from the maker. Be alert to plated zinc or iron, painted surfaces and modern reproductions.

Why exact identification may need analysis

Visual inspection cannot determine alloy percentages. Non-destructive methods such as X-ray fluorescence can provide elemental information when the distinction matters for attribution, value or treatment.

Safe handling

Wear clean nitrile gloves for polished metal and support heavy objects from their base. Avoid handles, projecting limbs and old soldered joints. Store copper alloys away from damp and materials that emit damaging vapours.

For an important object, preserve the surface and seek a metals conservator rather than chasing a bright-metal test.
