How to Recognise Chippendale-Style Furniture

Chippendale is used both for Thomas Chippendale's London workshop and for a broad family of furniture inspired by his published designs. Most furniture called "Chippendale style" was not made personally by Chippendale or necessarily by his firm.

Understand the design sources

Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director brought together English interpretations of Rococo, Gothic and Chinese-inspired design. Furniture may feature carved mahogany, cabriole or straight legs, pierced chair splats, fretwork, scrolls, shells, leaves and strong architectural forms.

Separate style from workshop evidence

A ribbon-back chair or carved claw-and-ball foot may be Chippendale in style without a connection to the London firm. For a workshop attribution, specialists examine construction habits, secondary woods, tool evidence, documented commissions and provenance.

Inspect construction and condition

Check dovetails, drawer runners, backboards, seat rails, blocks, hardware and surface. Later copies may be old antiques themselves. Replacement feet, rails, handles and upholstery are common.

Use accurate wording

By Thomas Chippendale requires strong documentary or specialist evidence.
Attributed to expresses a reasoned but uncertain workshop connection.
Chippendale period refers to date, not maker.
Chippendale style refers primarily to design.

Do not upgrade a style label into a maker claim. Buy according to design, quality, condition and evidence.
