How to Fix a Sticking Drawer in Antique Furniture

A sticking drawer is annoying, but it is also useful evidence. The point of resistance can reveal seasonal wood movement, a worn runner, a loose joint or an earlier repair. The safest approach is to diagnose the cause before removing any material.

This guide is intended for traditional solid-wood drawers in antique chests, desks, cabinets and tables. Stop if the piece is especially valuable, badly distorted, veneered at the sticking edge, or structurally unstable; an experienced furniture conservator can investigate without sacrificing original material.

Before you begin

Gather a soft brush, a vacuum with a low-suction nozzle, a straightedge, a candle or block of plain paraffin wax, a soft pencil, a screwdriver that correctly fits the existing screws, and a strong light. You may also need hide glue and clamps for a loose joint, but do not glue anything until you have identified the failure.

Avoid silicone sprays, cooking oil and wet lubricants. They can migrate into unfinished wood, attract dirt or complicate a future finish or glue repair. Do not reach immediately for coarse sandpaper or a plane. A drawer that fitted for a century can often be made to run well again without permanently changing its dimensions.

1. Find exactly where it binds

Empty the drawer and remove it carefully. Support its weight with both hands, especially if the bottom is thin or the drawer is wide. Brush and vacuum loose dust from the runners, guides and the inside of the carcase.

Slide the empty drawer in slowly and note when the resistance begins:

  • If it catches immediately, inspect the drawer front, side edges and guides.
  • If it binds only near the closed position, inspect the rear of the drawer, its stops and any internal obstruction.
  • If one corner sits proud, check for a twisted carcase, a loose drawer joint or uneven runner wear.
  • If the problem changes with the weather, seasonal swelling is likely contributing.

Rub a soft pencil lightly on suspected contact areas, then operate the drawer once or twice. Transferred or burnished marks can help locate the high spot. Old shiny wear marks are also valuable clues.

2. Check for simple obstructions

Look behind and below the drawer opening for fallen objects, loose veneer, projecting nails, displaced drawer stops and screws that have backed out. A small obstruction can imitate a warped drawer.

Tighten only screws that are genuinely loose, using a driver that fully fits the slot. Stop when the screw is secure; forcing an old screw can strip its hole or damage the head. Never drive down an original nail simply to hide a structural problem.

3. Test the drawer outside the carcase

Place the drawer on a flat surface and check whether it rocks. Inspect the dovetails or other corner joints for gaps, and look along each side for bowing. The bottom should sit correctly in its grooves and should not project beneath the sides unless that is part of the original construction.

A loose front or back can pull the box out of square. If gentle hand pressure closes the joint and restores the drawer's shape, the joint may need to be cleaned and reglued. Traditional hot or liquid hide glue is often appropriate for joints originally assembled with animal glue because it remains reversible and repairable. Do not add metal brackets or drive screws through sound joinery.

If the drawer is square but the carcase opening is not, inspect the furniture itself. Loose case joints, a sagging top or an uneven floor can distort the opening. Correct the structural or support problem before altering the drawer.

4. Inspect runners, kickers and guides

Drawer sides usually travel on wooden runners. Above them, kickers may limit upward movement; side guides keep the drawer aligned. Compare the left and right sides.

Deep grooves in the underside of a drawer side or hollowed runners indicate wear. The drawer may drop low enough for its front or bottom edge to rub. Removing wood from another area will not cure that cause and may make the fit worse.

A worn runner can often be repaired with a carefully fitted strip of compatible wood, while a worn drawer side may require a discreet build-up on its lower edge. These repairs demand accurate fitting and respect for original construction. If the wear is severe, or if the drawer front is veneered or decorated, consult a furniture repair specialist.

5. Account for humidity

Wood expands and contracts as indoor humidity changes. A drawer that binds during a humid spell may free itself when conditions stabilise. Move the furniture away from damp walls, radiators and direct heat, and allow it time to acclimatise in a steady room environment.

Do not force a swollen drawer. If it is trapped, pull evenly from both sides of the front rather than twisting one handle. Remove adjacent drawers, where possible, so you can check for obstructions and apply gentle pressure from behind.

Persistent seasonal binding deserves careful assessment. Only when the structure is sound and the exact contact point is proven should a tiny amount of wood be removed. Preserve tool marks, labels, ink inscriptions and finished or veneered surfaces.

6. Lubricate sound contact surfaces

When the drawer and carcase are structurally sound, clean and dry, a small amount of plain paraffin wax can reduce friction. Rub it sparingly on the bearing surfaces of the runners and the corresponding lower edges of the drawer sides. Operate the drawer several times, then wipe away excess.

Wax is a finishing touch, not a cure for loose joints, severe wear or distortion. Avoid heavily perfumed or coloured candles, and keep wax off surfaces that may soon need gluing.

When minimal fitting is justified

Minor fitting may be appropriate if a stable drawer has one clearly identified unfinished solid-wood high spot and lubrication does not solve the problem. Mark the precise contact area and remove the least material possible with a fine, sharp tool. Recheck the fit after every pass.

Do not sand or plane the decorated drawer front, veneered edges, joint pins or broad areas "until it fits." That can erase evidence, expose fresh wood and leave an excessive gap when humidity falls. If you are unsure whether an edge is solid or veneered, stop.

Final checks

Reload the drawer gradually after it operates freely while empty. Excess weight can deflect a thin bottom or accelerate runner wear. Make sure pulls and escutcheons are secure, but do not overtighten their fasteners.

A successful repair should leave the drawer moving smoothly without disguising how the furniture was built. Keeping a short note of what you cleaned, glued, waxed or adjusted will also help the next owner or repairer understand the work.

  • Clean out dust and check for fallen objects.
  • Locate the exact rubbing point before altering anything.
  • Confirm that the drawer is square and its joints are sound.
  • Compare runners, guides and wear on both sides.
  • Allow for seasonal humidity changes.
  • Use plain paraffin wax sparingly on clean bearing surfaces.
  • Preserve original wood, veneer, labels and tool marks.
  • Refer severe wear, distortion or valuable pieces to a specialist.
