A detailed invoice protects buyer and seller and becomes an important provenance document. It should identify the object clearly rather than merely say “antique furniture.”

Look for date, seller and buyer details, price, materials, dimensions, approximate date, maker or attribution, origin where known, condition and disclosed restoration.

Before you commit

Ask for uncertain claims to be qualified accurately and for verbal assurances to be written down before payment.

Keep the record

Store the original invoice securely and keep a digital copy with photographs and subsequent conservation records.
