Drawer sides, bottoms and backs are less visible than show surfaces and may preserve useful construction evidence.

What to examine

Note timber, grain direction, bottom grooves, nail or glue fixing, wear and later runners. Compare every drawer.

Avoid the common trap

One replacement drawer can differ legitimately. Date the entire object from the combined evidence, not one board.

Record your findings

Photograph the whole object, the feature in context and a close-up with scale. Note what is observed separately from any conclusion.
