
How to Distinguish Iron, Steel and Cast Iron in Antiques
Iron, steel and cast iron are related ferrous materials whose surface appearance can overlap after years of paint and corrosion. Accurate identification often depends on manufacturing evidence and context rather than colour.
Begin with form and manufacture
Cast iron is poured into a mould and is well suited to repeated, complex shapes. It may show mould seams, casting texture and identical decorative units. It is relatively brittle compared with wrought material.
Wrought iron was shaped by hammering, rolling and forging. Look for drawn-out forms, forge welds, punched holes and individual variation. Historic wrought iron can show a fibrous structure at an existing break, but never create a break to test it.
Steel covers a range of iron-carbon alloys and appears in blades, springs, tools and later structural or decorative products. Heat treatment and manufacturing history affect its properties.
Use a magnet carefully
Most iron and steels are magnetic, but a magnet does not distinguish cast iron from wrought iron or ordinary steel. Plating, internal armatures and mixed construction can also create confusing results.
Keep magnets away from clocks, compasses and magnetically sensitive mechanisms.
Study corrosion and finish
Red-brown rust is common on ferrous metal. Paint, blackening, bluing, plating and deliberate patination may be original finishes. Do not grind or wire-brush a patch to expose bare metal.
Fresh flaking, expanding rust and distortion indicate an active condition problem. Look for repair evidence
Welds, brazing, screws and replacement sections can reveal later intervention. Modern welding on an older forged object should be recorded but does not date the whole piece.
Use several clues
Consider object type, construction, tool marks, seams, weight, maker marks and documentary history. Laboratory analysis may be needed for an important attribution.
Handle rusty or sharp objects with appropriate protection and support their weight. Seek a metals conservator for unstable surfaces or rare historic ironwork.
