How to Correct a Warped Antique Drawer Front

A warped drawer front may be solid, veneered, cockbeaded or structurally tied to drawer sides. The distortion often reflects moisture imbalance or altered construction.

Diagnose the failure

Remove the drawer and determine whether the front itself is warped or the whole drawer is twisted. Check runners, stops and carcase square.

Identify solid versus veneered front.
Measure bow and twist over time.
Check dovetails and drawer-side shrinkage.
Inspect veneer lifting and old battens.
Compare storage humidity.

Photograph marks, joint orientation, hardware and earlier repairs. Stop using the object until the load path is understood. Do not treat movement as merely a glue problem when timber is split or components are distorted.

Construction and retained material

Forcing a veneered front can crack veneer or joints. Solid timber may retain permanent set after environmental change.

Keep every serviceable original component. Replacement should be limited to material that is missing or structurally incapable of performing its role. New timber should match species, grain direction and mechanical function without being disguised as untouched original work.

Repair method

Correct the environment and drawer structure first. Minor distortion may be accommodated through runner and stop repair; severe cases require slow, controlled treatment by a conservator.

Rehearse assembly and clamping dry. Protect finished surfaces, apply only enough pressure for alignment and allow the adhesive to cure fully before loading.

Avoid these mistakes

Soaking or steaming the front at home.
Clamping flat in one operation.
Planing the show face or drawer sides.
Adding rigid cross-grain battens.
Ignoring carcase distortion.

Final checks

Ensure the drawer runs without abrasion and the front aligns acceptably without removing historic material.

Complex upholstery, paint, gilding, marquetry, important provenance or severe structural loss warrants a qualified conservator.
