A true pair was conceived or made together, but old objects often acquire partners later. Comparison should cover construction and history as well as outward appearance.

What to do

Set the pieces side by side and compare dimensions, timber, grain, tool marks, hardware, wear, colour, feet and repairs. Use measurements rather than visual impression alone.

Small hand-made variations may be expected; identical modern replacements can be more suspicious than modest differences.
