How to Care for Asian Lacquerware

Historic Asian lacquer can be exquisitely layered, carved, sprinkled or inlaid. Its surface may be sensitive to light, humidity shifts and cleaning materials.

Safe routine care

Limit bright light, avoid radiators and support lids or trays from beneath. Dust only if the surface is secure, using a very soft brush.

What not to do

Cracks, lifting layers and loose inlay are warnings. Never use furniture polish, alcohol, oil or water without specialist testing.

Storage and specialist help

Retain detached flakes in a labelled container and consult a lacquer conservator promptly.
