How to Care for Antique Mirror Glass and Silvering

Historic mirror value may lie in the plate, silvering, bevel, backing and frame together. Dark spots and clouding often originate behind the glass and cannot be cleaned from the front.

Why the material is vulnerable

Moisture entering edges damages silvering. Old glass may be thin, uneven or stressed by distorted frames. Some historic processes involve hazardous materials.

What to inspect

• Inspect edges, bevel and backing.
• Check frame distortion and plate movement.
• Record foxing and replacement evidence.
• Look for flaking paint or gilt around the glass.
• Assess safe removal only if essential.

Photograph condition and identify every material before cleaning. Check hidden and protected areas; damage often begins at edges, fixings and interfaces between unlike materials.

Safe care

Dust and clean the front with minimal controlled moisture applied to the cloth, never sprayed. Prevent liquid reaching edges. Large plates need trained handlers.

Start with environmental correction and the least interventive method. Use clean barriers, soft tools and controlled suction only where the surface is stable. Stop if colour, flakes, fibres or corrosion products move.

Avoid

• Spraying cleaner onto glass.
• Removing backing casually.
• Re-silvering to erase age.
• Lifting by frame cresting.
• Using abrasives on old glass.

Monitoring and specialist help

Keep away from damp walls and inspect backing without unnecessary removal.

Seek a conservator for active flaking, mould, structural failure, rare materials, protected wildlife products or uncertain earlier treatments.
