
How to Care for Antique Metal Objects and Prevent Corrosion
Antique metal objects may combine iron, copper alloys, silver, tin, lead, zinc, wood, leather and coatings. Correct care begins with identifying the material and preserving original surfaces.
Inspect the surface
Look for loose powder, flaking corrosion, cracks, active orange rust, pale green powder, dampness and unstable joins. Distinguish deliberate patina, paint and plating from corrosion before cleaning.
Handle appropriately
Support heavy metal from its base and protect projecting handles or legs. Wear clean gloves suited to the metal and surface; fingerprints can etch polished copper alloys and steel. Beware of sharp edges and lead-containing dust.
Keep conditions dry and stable
High humidity accelerates many corrosion processes. Keep metal away from damp walls, leaks and floors. Do not seal a damp object inside plastic.

Use compatible storage materials
Avoid direct contact with rubber, acidic cardboard, wool, felt, fresh paint, uncured sealants and some woods. Use conservation-quality enclosures and inert supports. Separate dissimilar metals if contact encourages corrosion.
Dust without stripping history
Remove loose dust with a soft brush where the surface is stable. Do not use wire wool, powered tools, household acids, vinegar, cola or general metal polish. Polishing can remove plating, tool marks, patina and maker detail.
Monitor active change
Photograph affected areas with scale and date. Check whether powder or flakes reappear after the area beneath is cleaned. Isolate actively corroding objects from neighbouring materials.
Seek specialist advice
Use a metals conservator for active bronze disease, archaeological metal, plated objects, arms and armour, lead, painted metal, machinery, or items with moving mechanisms. A bright surface is not the goal; stability and retained evidence are.
