How to Care for Jet Jewellery and Ornaments

Jet is an organic material formed from fossilised wood and was widely used in nineteenth-century mourning jewellery.

Safe routine care

Support strings and fittings, keep pieces separate and wipe lightly with a soft dry cloth when secure.

What not to do

Jet can chip at facets and drill holes. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning, soaking, perfume and abrasive polish.

Storage and specialist help

Store flat in a padded box and restring only with methods appropriate to the original construction.
