Buying Antique Upholstered Furniture Safely

Upholstered furniture may conceal its frame, old repairs, pests and multiple campaigns of fabric and stuffing. A beautiful cover is not a condition report.

What to do

Check frame movement, rails, feet, springs, odour, staining and signs of insect activity. Ask what lies beneath the current cover and whether fire-safety rules affect intended use.

Before you commit

Do not remove historic fabric casually. Earlier layers and tack patterns may have research value even when too fragile for use.

Keep the record

For regular seating, obtain structural and upholstery assessment before purchase and budget for conservation-minded work.
