Buying Antique Furniture with Marble or Stone Tops

Stone tops are heavy, brittle and frequently associated with bases that have been altered or replaced. Examine top and support as related but distinct components.

What to do

Check cracks, repaired breaks, chips, stains, warping, underside tool marks and how the stone locates on the base. Compare wear and dimensions for evidence of association.

Before you commit

Never lift furniture by gripping the stone. Ask whether the top is loose and how it will be packed and carried.

Keep the record

A stone conservator can advise on structural cracks; furniture repairs should not trap the slab or place stress at one point.
