Bringing Antique Furniture Out of Cold Storage Safely

Cold furniture moved directly into warm humid air can develop surface condensation and rapid dimensional change. Veneer, glue, paint, metal and upholstery may all be affected.

First assessment

Measure conditions in storage and destination. Inspect packaging, damp, mould, corrosion, pests and loose decorative surfaces before moving.

• Use temperature and humidity loggers.
• Check metal for condensation risk.
• Inspect veneer and paint edges.
• Look for mould odour or growth.
• Assess whether sealed plastic trapped moisture.

Photograph condition before cleaning or movement. Identify all materials and test whether surfaces are stable. Stop if paint, gilding, fibres, veneer or finish begin to move.

Safe treatment and handling

Move through an intermediate cool, dry space where possible and allow slow acclimatisation while wrapped in breathable protection. Open packaging gradually and monitor surfaces.

Work from the least interventive option. Use clean tools, controlled suction and barriers that prevent abrasion. Improve environment and remove the cause of damage before attempting cosmetic improvement.

Do not do this

• Placing cold furniture beside a radiator.
• Unwrapping into humid warm air immediately.
• Wiping condensation across finish.
• Using the object before joints stabilise.
• Bringing active mould into occupied rooms.

Monitoring and prevention

Continue monitoring for several days, inspect joints and drawers, and delay polishing or repair until equilibrium is reached.

Seek professional help for active mould, sewage contamination, fire residues, suspected pesticides, rare textiles, unstable paint or major structural failure.
