Boulle work combines cut metal and contrasting sheet materials in elaborate marquetry, associated with André-Charles Boulle and later revivals.

Première-partie and contre-partie use reciprocal patterns from the same cutting packet. Brass lifts and shell movement are common condition issues.

Wildlife law may apply to tortoiseshell. Never flatten loose work with heat or casual adhesive.
