Casters range from small brass wheels to ceramic and later industrial fittings, supporting movement and altering height.

What to examine

Look at wheel material, fork, plate, screws and the socket in the leg. Compare all corners for matching wear.

Avoid the common trap

Casters may be replaced as a set. Check whether removal or addition has shortened, split or raised the furniture.

Record your findings

Photograph the whole object, the feature in context and a close-up with scale. Note what is observed separately from any conclusion.
