The Antique Display Cabinet Checklist: What to Inspect Before You Buy

A display cabinet must protect its contents while remaining stable, accessible and visually appropriate. Old glass, narrow feet and heavy shelves deserve particular attention.

Check stability first

View the cabinet from all sides and test for movement only with permission. Inspect legs, feet, plinth, joints and back. Tall cabinets may need sympathetic wall restraint.

Examine glazing

Look for cracks, chips, loose panes and failing putty or beads. Old glass may show waviness and bubbles, but those features alone do not prove age. Confirm whether curved or bevelled panes are original because replacement can be costly.

Inspect shelves and supports

Check glass or wooden shelves for chips, bowing and secure supports. Confirm load limits for the intended collection. Missing shelf pegs and improvised brackets can create serious risk.

Operate doors and locks

Doors should open without twisting the frame. Inspect hinges, catches and keyholes. Do not force stiff locks. Check that a key is included and that the cabinet can be accessed after placement.

Look at lining and interior

Silk, velvet, paper and mirror linings may be original, replaced or degraded. Faded, acidic or shedding material can harm displayed objects. Ask when it was installed and whether adhesives were used.

Search for alterations

Unused holes, changed feet, replacement backs and internal lighting can reveal modification. Electrical fittings should be professionally assessed and should not expose antiques to excess heat or ultraviolet light.

Consider the display environment

A cabinet reduces dust and handling but does not automatically control humidity or pollutants. Materials within a sealed case can emit damaging vapours. Seek conservation advice for sensitive metals, paper, textiles or unstable glass.

Document the purchase

Request dimensions, restoration, glazing history, keys, shelf count and condition in writing. Photograph before transport and use experienced movers.
