The Antique Desk and Bureau Checklist: What to Inspect Before You Buy

Antique desks and bureaux contain moving parts, fitted interiors and vulnerable writing surfaces. A piece can look convincing while concealing replaced leather, altered drawers or a weak fall-front mechanism.

Confirm the form and dimensions

Establish whether it is a pedestal desk, writing table, bureau, secretaire or another form. Measure height, knee space, overall depth and the space required to open a fall or drawer. Check the delivery route.

Operate it carefully

Ask the seller to demonstrate drawers, slides, tambours and fall fronts. Do not force a lock or stiff mechanism. A bureau fall should be properly supported by lopers or another designed system.

Inspect drawers and interior

Remove drawers with permission and compare dovetails, bottoms, runners, locks and timber. Check whether fitted compartments are complete and whether hidden or document drawers have been damaged.

Look for unused holes, fresh partitions and mismatched colour that may indicate alteration.

Examine the writing surface

Leather and baize are often replaced through normal use. Ask when the surface was renewed and what lies beneath it. Check for lifting edges, stains, tears and excessive adhesive.

Assess structure and restoration

Inspect pedestals, feet, castors, top attachment, backboards and knee-hole framing. Look for splits, fresh blocks, metal reinforcement, woodworm and movement. Check hardware and marks

Compare handles, escutcheons and locks across the piece. Search drawers, backs and undersides for maker or retailer marks, but assess them with construction and provenance.

Ask the seller

Request date evidence, restoration history, key availability, a condition report and confirmation that the components belong together. Budget for specialist moving, leather work and structural repairs.
