Corner cupboards make efficient use of a room and survive as wall-hung, floor-standing and two-part forms. Paint, glazing and feet are frequently altered.

Recognising the form

Examine triangular or canted plan, backboards, fixing points, shelves, doors and cornice. Interior paint and spoon racks may reveal original domestic use.

Names used by dealers and catalogues can change over time. Start with construction and function, then compare the object with dated examples.

Dating and attribution

Joinery, hinges, glass, mouldings and secondary woods can establish a broad period. Regional attribution needs documented comparisons rather than a single decorative detail.

Use several independent clues together. Patina, wear or one old-looking component cannot prove that the whole object is of one period.

Condition and alterations

Check wall-fixing damage, replaced backs, cut-down bases, new glazing, door twist and shelves weakened by loading. Confirm the cupboard is stable in its intended installation.

Photograph the back, underside, fittings and interior. Replaced working parts may be acceptable when honestly described, but they affect interpretation, value and care.

Care and use

Use fixings appropriate to wall and weight without altering important original holes unnecessarily. Distribute contents and protect painted interiors from abrasion.

Keep the furniture in stable indoor conditions, protect it from direct sunlight and avoid overloading moving parts. Any structural repair should preserve original material and remain serviceable in the future.

Buying checklist

Confirm dimensions, completeness, keys or loose components, restoration history and transport needs. Ask which statements are documented facts and which are seller attributions. For expensive or unusual examples, an independent condition report is worthwhile.
