The Antique Bookcase Checklist: What to Inspect Before You Buy

An antique bookcase must carry substantial weight safely. Before buying, inspect both originality and practical stability, including how the upper and lower sections connect.

Measure everything

Record height, width, depth and shelf clearance. Measure doors, stair turns and ceiling height at the destination. Confirm whether cornices, shelves, doors and upper sections detach for transport.

Check the stance

View from the front and side. Look for lean, twist and uneven doors. Inspect feet and base for damp damage, reduction or later plinths. Tall furniture may require discreet wall restraint installed without damaging important fabric.

Inspect shelves and supports

Check every shelf for bowing, cracks and later cutting. Confirm that pegs, runners or brackets are present and appropriate. A replacement shelf can be useful, but should be disclosed.

Examine doors and glazing

Open doors only with permission. Inspect hinges, locks, glazing bars and catches. Old glass may have movement and imperfections, while replacement panes can be safer after breakage. Ask what is original.

Look for alteration

Unused hinge mortises, filled holes, mismatched mouldings and fresh internal timber can reveal converted cupboards or changed shelf layouts. Compare top and base for compatible construction and finish.

Check surface and pests

Look for lifting veneer, fading, water marks and fresh insect dust, especially at the back and base. Plan loading and use

Books are heavy. Ask whether the structure is suitable for the proposed load and place heavier volumes low. Obtain specialist advice for a tall, fragile or unusually valuable bookcase.

Buy according to quality, condition and evidence, not simply height or dramatic appearance.
